Vendor Tips - Officiants

# 1 - Quick Tips and Pointers
Someone of official standing will perform the marriage ceremony. Selecting an Officiant is an important decision. He or she will provide the tone of the celebration with lasting words of wisdom. If you are not close to a clergy, many brides and grooms select one from a list. If this is the case, then spend time together to get to know each other before the day of the wedding.

# 2 - About
If you are having a religious wedding, contact your clergy early in your planning. This item should be on your Top Ten things to do after becoming engaged. Your clergy will inform you of all the requirements that must be fulfilled before the wedding. Some of the requirements could include participating with peers in a couples’ workshop, attending a couples’ retreat, and/or attending a series of marriage seminars. Set the wedding date and workshop dates. The clergy will also inform you of other requirements, such as church membership, baptismal papers, and previous marriage requirements. You may have to complete a relationship questionnaire to discuss intimate situations on topics such as children, in-laws, depression, loss of income, buying a home, freedom, power, expectations and work.

You may not be close to your clergy and are not sure what will be said during the ceremony. Ask if you could read the words planned for the ceremony. Some Officiants are more verbal than others and you want to know exactly what will be announced to you and your guests before the wedding day, not on the wedding day.

You may have special requests for your wedding. Most clergy are acceptable to your needs. The more orthodox prefer to stay with tradition, but there’s no harm in asking. You may prefer to write your own vows; ask the clergy about how to make the appropriate adjustments.

Lastly, ask about the service fee, how payment can be made and when payment is expected. If the Officiant is a person you found from a listing, then ask for three referrals you can call, ask about how long the person has been performing weddings, and ask how you can be protected if he/she is ill or doesn’t show up on the wedding day.
